Carrier Coverages and Lines of Business
The Lines of Business tab in Carrier/MGA Setup allows Agency Managers to enter carrier-specific settings for each Line of Business (LOB). The details entered here determine which LOBs and default coverages are available on policies for the selected carrier, per application type. This tab also enables you to configure Policy Snapshots and Custom Policy Titles for each application type per carrier.
When adding a new carrier to HawkSoft through Carrier Setup, the last step is to complete the carrier's Lines of Business settings.
To learn how to create a new carrier, see Adding a Carrier. To learn how to modify other information for an existing carrier, see Editing Carrier/MGA Information.
Save time! You can clone an existing carrier, such as the prospect carrier to quickly copy the carrier's LOB information to a new carrier. See Copying a Carrier for more information.
It is important to fully complete each carrier's Lines of Business settings, as these settings will enable your agents to quickly add LOB and coverage details to each of the carrier's policies, with only minimal manual input needed from the agent.

About the Lines of Business settings
At the top of the Lines of Business settings, there are eight tabs: Personal, Commercial, Agriculture, Life, Health, Surety Bond, Other, and Employee Benefits. These tabs correspond to the eight different types of policy Application Types. The lines of business, coverages, and settings contained within each Application Type tab are independent of each other. For example, adding the Commercial General Liability (CGL) LOB to the Commercial tab will not add the CGL line of business to the Personal tab. This enables you to configure a carrier's default LOB and coverage settings differently for Personal policies, Commercial policies, and other policy types.
The Lines of Business selected in these settings correspond to the LOBs that Agents can choose in the Policy Information tab when inserting or editing a policy, and the default coverages, limits, and deductibles entered for each LOB here correspond to the coverages that appear in the Coverages tab when inserting or editing a policy.
Policy Downloads update the LOB and coverage order, replacing any manual order set in the edit screens. Carrier quotes, ACORD forms, and proposals created in HawkSoft reflect the order displayed on the policy when it was generated.
The Lines of Business settings for a carrier also enable you to:
-
Add different Policy Forms to each LOB (such as HO3 or HO5 for Homeowners' policies)
-
Configure each LOB's default coverages
Coverages which are automatically added to the policy's Coverages tab when a Line of Business is added to a policy :-
Add a list of limits and deductibles to a default coverage, which users can select from a drop-down when modifying policy coverages
-
Designate a limit and deductible to be the 'default' for that coverage, meaning they will automatically be chosen as the coverage's limit and deductible
-
When editing a policy's coverages, users can still choose a different limit or deductible for a specific coverage if needed by typing a different number into, or selecting a different number from, the Limits and/or Deductibles drop-downs.
-
-
-
Limit specific LOBs, default coverages, and limits/deductibles to certain states only
-
Override your agency's global Policy Snapshot setting for this carrier's policies
-
Configure a carrier's default Policy Coverages/Fees/Taxes (coverages, fees, or taxes applied directly to the policy, rather than a specific LOB)
This option is only editable if Policy Snapshots are enabled in your agency's General Configuration settings.
Policy Snapshots are attachments that record a policy's information at a certain point in time, and are intended to provide a historical record of policy changes for policies that do not download. For more information, see Policy Snapshot.
The main Policy Snapshot setting for your agency is configured in General Configuration. If needed, the Policy Snapshot Override drop-down enables you to force a specific Policy Snapshot setting for all policies under the selected carrier and Application Type, regardless of the setting in General Configuration.
Choose from one of the following four options in the Policy Snapshot Override drop-down:
-
Use General Configuration Settings - This is the default setting. Policies under this carrier and Application Type will defer to your agency's global Policy Snapshot setting in General Configuration.
-
Prompt users before creating Policy Snapshot - When a user makes changes to this policy's information and/or coverages, a prompt will ask the user whether a Policy Snapshot should be created.
-
Automatically create Policy Snapshot - When a user makes changes to this policy's information and/or coverages, a Policy Snapshot will always be created.
-
Do not create Policy Snapshot for this carrier - Policy Snapshots will never be created for this carrier's policies under this Application Type.
The Policy Title is the label that shows on the policy's tab in the client (for example, AUTOP for Personal Auto policies). By default, policies will use the 3-5 letter code assigned to each line of business by ACORD. For a full list of these ACORD-standard codes, see ACORD Line of Business List.
HawkSoft has the following default list of custom Policy Titles:
| Application Type | Policy Title |
|---|---|
| Personal | ATV, Classic, Cycle, Golf Cart, RV, Snowmobile, Trailer, 2nd Home, Condo, Mobilehome, Renters, Vacant |
| Commercial | BOP |
| Life | Term Life, Whole Life, UNIV Life, VOL Life |
| Health | Dental, Health, HSA, LTD, STD, Vision |
| Employee Benefits | Dental-GRP, Health-GRP, Life-GRP, LTC-GRP, LTD-GRP, STD-GRP, Vision-GRP |
You can add, edit, or delete default custom policy titles for each application type and carrier as needed. Custom policy titles can have up to 10 characters and do not need to follow ACORD format. For example, you can create a custom policy title and set the policy tab to display Trailer instead of AUTOP.
To add custom Policy Titles to an Application Type:
- On the carrier profile in Carrier/MGA Setup, select the application type you are creating custom policy titles for (personal, commercial, etc).
-
In the Custom Policy Title section, toggle LOB Code Titles to Custom Titles (green).
-
Type your custom policy title into the Add a custom title... text box, then press Tab on your keyboard to add the custom title and continue adding as many titles as you need.
If you need to delete a custom Policy Title, click the X button next to the Title you want to remove.
-
Click Save once finished adding Custom Policy Titles.
You can use the Data Replace feature to update custom policy titles in bulk across multiple records. See Data Replace for more information.
Once the carrier is saved, your agents can select a Custom Policy Title from the drop-down on the Policy Information screen when inserting a policy with the selected carrier and application type. The policy tab on the client will display the custom title. Carrier downloads do not overwrite the title — this is for your agency only.
Complete or edit the Lines of Business settings

-
Select the first Application Type tab that is relevant to this carrier from the top of the dialog.
-
Click Assign Lines of Business to configure the lines of business, policy forms, and coverages for the selected Application Type.
The Assigning Lines of Business dialog opens with a list to choose from.

Click the
Edit button on the Line of Business to configure policy forms, choose which states this LOB is available in, and determine whether this LOB's default coverages should be added directly to the LOB, or to the locations/buildings on the policy.-
From the Automatically add default coverages to drop-down, choose whether to apply coverages directly under the LOB itself in the LOB Coverages table, to each Location on the policy, or Building on the policy. The coverages will automatically be added to the level selected here when the LOB is selected on a policy.
For example, if "Building" is selected in this drop-down, each and every building added to a policy (such as a Commercial Property policy) will have a copy of this coverage automatically added underneath it inside the Coverages tab of the Edit Client/Policy dialog. See Locations and Buildings, as well as Coverages on Policies, for more information.
-
If your agency does business in multiple states, and this carrier does not write this LOB in all states your agency does business in, click the states that this LOB does not apply to in the Line of Business States section then click Remove State to remove them from this carrier/LOB combination.
Only states which have been marked as Agency States appear in this list. If your agency writes this LOB for this carrier in a state that does not appear in the list, add that state to the Agency States list on the front page of Carrier/MGA Setup.
You can use the Show All toggle to see all states for selection of previously unselected states.

Add and configure default Coverages for the selected LOB.
To configure default Coverages for a line of business
Some lines of business have default limits and/or deductibles which are automatically added by HawkSoft when the LOB is added to the carrier. You can edit or remove these limits/deductibles, or add additional limits/deductibles alongside them, according to your agency's needs.
